The Portuguese legend, João Mário, has been one of the most influential figures in the history of football. His defensive masterclass at Benfica was instrumental in shaping the team’s success and legacy.

Born in Lisbon in 1975, João Mário began his career with F.C. Porto before moving to Benfica for a fee of €2 million. He quickly established himself as a key player for the club, becoming their first-choice defender under manager Jorge Jesus.

Mário’s defensive skills were evident from the start, and he played a crucial role in securing Benfica’s promotion to the top flight. Under José Mourinho, he continued to impress,Serie A Stadium winning several awards including the FIFA Club World Cup Golden Boot award in 2008.
